Verité Media and Politics has submitted a proposal to introduce national media guidelines on ethical reporting concerning women and girl-children. The proposal was handed over to the Deputy Minister of Mass Media, Kaushalya Ariyarathne, on November 4.
The initiative aims to align Sri Lanka’s media practices with international standards and the government’s ongoing efforts to reform media ethics. It recommends two immediate actions — drafting a survivor-centred national guideline for mainstream and digital media, and allocating funds in the 2026 Budget to train journalists and strengthen newsroom capacity on ethical reporting.
The proposal was developed in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. It was officially presented by Verité Media and Politics Head Deepanjalie Abeywardana, along with Programme Lead Mahoshadi Peiris and Team Leader Rochel Canagasabey.
