A special survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2014/2015 reveals 1.7% of Sri Lankans are blind, while 17% suffer from various visual disorders.
According to this survey, glaucoma accounts for 1% of the total issues. Since Glaucoma does not have any early symptoms and make people incurably blind, all who are above 40 should get their eyes tested at least once in two years.
Glaucoma can be detected early and diagnosed only through examining eyes. The damages are irreversible and medical treatment should be taken daily for lifetime. Undetected and untreated Glaucoma make people completely and permanently blind.
