Deputy Media Minister Karunaratne Paranavithana said that an independent Press Commission will be established shortly to regulate the media adding that the prevailing regulations pertaining to the Print Media was insufficient.
He was speaking at yesterday’s Cabinet Media briefing at the Government Information Department.
“Under the leadership of Wijayananda Jayaweera, measures are being taken to establish the Press Commission, Deputy Minister Paranavithana said.
He further said that the Code of Ethics is not just a norm, it needs to be implemented. Presently, there are no special laws to regulate the Code of Ethics of media personnel. “We will not forcefully implement it, we will seek the opinions of all relevant stakeholders and organisations,”the Deputy Media Minister said.
