Vavuniya Campus affiliated to the Jaffna University was made a National University named as Vavuniya University under the patronage of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, this morning. Vavuniya University is the 17th state university in the country. Students and Teachers made requests for a long time to convert Vavuniya Campus into a National University. Accordingly, the government has developed the campus into a University under the ‘Vistas of Prosperity’ statement to uplift higher education. It has been developed as a smart University with modern facilities. The President unveiled the plaque marking the creation of National University and also vested with the students Information Technology center and co-existence center. Addressing the gathering, the President said that the government hopes to create intellectuals will be able to withstand social changes in the future. He pointed out that the education system of the country should be strengthened to make the country powerful. The government has given priority to uplift national education. The number of students admitted to Universities annually, has been increased. The president appreciated the steps taken to prepare syllabuses according to social needs by providing knowledge on English and Information Technology to students who are following arts subjects. The President pointed out it is a present need to identify sectors with high job demands and to create intellectuals suitable for those employment opportunities. He said that the responsibility of the government is to provide opportunity to students who have passed G.C.E. Advanced Level, to study up to a degree. President Rajapaksa said that the bond of co-existence in the University is very strong and it will help in the development of the country
