President’s Christmas message
President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed relevant authorities to provide immediate relief to the people affected by the heavy rains and floods that prevailed in the Mullaitivu, Mannar and Kilinochchi District.
All necessary facilities will be provided to the people in the threatened areas until the floods subside, President Maithripala Sirisena instructed relevant authorities to release funds to the district secretaries promptly. The President has also instructed the Governor of the Northern Province, District Secretaries, the Army Commander and the Disaster Management Centers to carry out these relief programs expeditiously.
Due to the heavy rains that prevailed in the Northern Province, in the Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts experienced severe floods. As a result, spill gates were opened in several reservoirs, including Iranamadu.
The affected districts are Mullaithivu, Kilinochchi and Mannar and the Disaster Management Center has taken steps to provide relief to those affected who are living in 40 camps operating in these districts.
This is Christmas time. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe took time to visit the Paynters Children’s Home in Nuwara Eliya to make the children happy this season. The Prime Minister and Mrs. Wickremesinghe presented gift parcels to the children on their visit yesterday. (Pictures by Chandrasiri Mahagama).

Documents presented to President
China donated 90 water bowzers to Sri Lanka, further marking the strength of Sri Lanka-China friendship since ancient times. The documents for this donations were presented to President Maithripala Sirisena by Chinese Ambassador, Cheng Shu Ann at the Presidential secretariat yesterday (December 19).
China has decided to donate these water bowzers, worth over Rs One billion, because of the difficulties faced by the people in certain areas due to adverse weather conditions.
Two water bowzers were presented symbolically at this event. The Ambassador presented the keys and registration documents of these bowzers to the President.
The President handed over the documents to the Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management.
After that, the President also observed water bowzers.
Secretary to the President Mr. Udaya R. Seneviratne and senior officials of the Chinese Embassy also participated in the event.

The Presidential Task Force to monitor the development projects conducted in Northern and Eastern provinces met under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena for the 5th time yesterday (17) at the Presidential Secretariat .
During the meeting, The Task Force reviewed the progress of the development projects implemented so far in the Northern and Eastern Provinces and the ways to accelerate the development process.
Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan, Governors of the Northern and Eastern provinces , Secretary to the President Udaya R Seneviratne, public servants, Ministry Secretaries, Inspector General of Police, Pujitha Jayasundara and others participated in this meeting.
The State Christmas Festival 2018 under the theme ‘Birth of the Lord-Splendor of Christmas’ was held President Maithripala Sirisena participating as the Chief Guest, in Mannar, yesterday (16).
The State Christmas Festival was colourful with various items including Christmas carols and the President also presented awards and certificates to the winners of the competitions held in parallel to the State Christmas Festival 2018.
Apostolic Nuncio in Sri Lanka Archbishop Pierre Nguyên Van Tot, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka Most Rev. Dr. Winston S. Fernando, Bishop of Mannar Most Rev. Dr.Emmanuel Fernando, Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray and Catholic devotees participated on this occasion.
The Sri Lankan hearing impaired cricketers, who won the Deaf ICC T-20 cricket world cup, met with President Maithripala Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat, 14th December.
The tournament which was organized for the first time held in Delhi, India. The President who appreciated the talents of the Sri Lankan players extended his best wishes and President Sirisena had taken steps to provide financial donation for this cricket team prior to they leave for the tournament .
The President of the Sri Lanka Deaf Cricket Association, Anula Ranjani, coaches Jayalath Aponso and Ushantha Gunaratne also participated on this occasion.
The State Timber Corporation won the gold medal for the national business section at the National Business Excellence Award 2018 which is organized by the National Chamber of Commerce. President Maithripala Sirisena received the award as the subject minister at the President’s office yesterday(12).
This is the third time where the State Timber Corporation has won this award and the President appreciated their services.
The chairmen of State Timber Corporation Shantha Bandara presented this award to the President while the acting director M.Y.T. Pawara Kumara officers were present at this event.

“Harvest 2018” organized by the Minister of Agriculture with the intention to build a modern culture in agriculture is opened by President Maithripala Sirisena to at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference (BMICH) yesterday (11).
This exhibition is held for the public from 11- 16 from 9.00 a.m to 9.00 p.m and it is comprised of exhibition stalls, food stalls, fruits and vegetable stalls, and many other sections.
A number of local and foreign institutes are gathering in this exhibition and the key objectives of this exhibition are to introduce modern technological methods used for the development of agriculture to the Sri Lankan farmer community and it is expected to create a great demand for the vegetables and fruits cultivated in the Island in the foreign countries.
The President opened the exhibition and engaged in a friendly conversation with the office bearers.
Mahinda Amaraweera, Duminda Dissanayake, and the Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture K.D.S. Ruwanchandra and other officers were present in this event.
In view of producing the skilled youth required for the labor market which is being rapidly transformed with the modern technology, the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training has been provided the opportunity to follow the full-time and part-time vocational training courses, with free of charge for the students who sat for the G.C.E. (O/L).
This will assist to obtain vocational education, from National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) certificates levels up to technology degrees. Today the awareness notices has been distributed to the students who sat for the G.C.E. O /L.
Therefore, Ministry requires to apply applications from government approved and government registered training institutions located island wide. From this 2057 courses can be applied under 28 vocational trades.
