The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has approved the request made by the Ceylon Electricity Board for rotational load shedding today, due to the shortage of fuel supplies. Commission Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said that power cuts of 04 hours and 40 minutes will be imposed in the areas mentioned under groups A, B and C in the power interruption schedule.
Meanwhile power cuts of 04 hours and 30 minutes will be imposed in the other areas, he said. The Commission chairman said that the power cuts of 4 hours and 40 minutes will be imposed between 8.30 a.m. and 10.30 p.m. in groups A, B and C while it will be divided as 02 hours in the morning and 02 hours 40 minutes in the night.
Meanwhile in the other groups, the power cuts of 04 hours and 30 minutes will be imposed between 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 p.m. while it will be split as 02 hours in the morning and 02 and a half hours in the night.

The parliament will convene today.Parliament Communications Department said a number of Committees including Ministerial Consultative Committees are scheduled to meet this week.

Accordingly, the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Energy, Ministerial Consultative Committee on Agriculture and the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Wildlife & Forest Conservation will meet today.

The Ministerial Consultative Committee on Labor and the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Lands are scheduled to meet tomorrow.

The Select Committee of Parliament to Identify Appropriate Reforms of the Election Laws and the Electoral System and to Recommend Necessary Amendments is scheduled to meet on February 24th.

Furthermore, the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus is scheduled to meet today.

Radio Dambana of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation marks its 12th anniversary today.It was set up on the 11th of September 2016. Radio Dambana is the only radio channel in Sri Lanka that targets the indigenous community of the country. Concentrated in Dambana area and is operated without any commercial interest.

Considering the preservation of identity, beliefs, art forms and customs of the indigenous community as a national

responsibility,

Dambana Radio broadcast many programmes during the past period connected with and important to their lifestyle. The special programme “ Wasa wisa nethi Govithena” was aired with a view to encouraging people to take up toxic free farming and highlighting the use of organic fertilizer in the farming of

paddy and other crops.

Today marks the 65th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the People’s Republic of China and the 70th anniversary of Rubber – Rice pact between China and Sri lanka. A ceremony will be held today at the Lotus pond theatre in Colombo under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as an accolade for long-standing friendship and mutual trust between the two countries.

The Health Ministry says 1,217 new COVID-19 infections were reported yesterday.

According to the Epidemiology Unit report, a total of 631,816 COVID-19 cases have been reported in Sri Lanka since the beginning of the pandemic.

While 19,875 infected patients are currently under medical care at hospitals and homes, 596,042 patients have fully recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

Sri Lanka yesterday reported 25 deaths raising the total to 15,899.

So far total of 16,821,707 people have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 14,044,375 have received the second dose. In addition, 6,214,739 have received the third booster dose.

The renovated Dharmapala Park located on the edge of the Galle Fort will be opened by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today. The Dharmapala Park, popular with both local and foreign tourists was in a state of disrepair due to a lack of proper maintenance. The renovation work of the Dharmapala Park in Galle was carried out under the supervision of the Urban Development Authority.

The 9th National Conference of the All Island Professional Lecturers’ Association was held under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in Colombo this afternoon (16).

The All Island Professional Lecturers’ Association (APLA) is an organisation founded in 2004 by a group of tuition teachers from all over Sri Lanka. It has a membership of over 3,500, representing a wide range of fields including university professors, lecturers, professionals, and teachers from public schools.

The 9th National Conference of the APLA and their Annual Election of office bearers was held today. President Rajapaksa launched the ‘Green Teacher’ website and presented souvenirs to four former presidents and a member of the Association.

Dr. Amith Pussella, President of the Association, and members of the Executive Council presented a memento to the President.

Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, State Ministers Dayasiri Jayasekara, Sisira Jayakody, Seetha Arambepola, MPs Gunapala Ratnasekera, Wasantha Yapa Bandara and others were also present.

 
 

The 43rd Navam Perahera of the Gangarama Temple in Hunupitiya, Colombo was commenced under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, today (16).

The Perahera was organized under the guidance of Ven. Galaboda Gnanissara Thera and under the supervision of the Viharadhikari of the Gangarama Vihara, Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thera.

Most Venerable Dimbulkumbure Wimaladhamma Thera, the Anunayake Thera of the Malwaththa Chapter, conducted the Five Precepts for devotees and delivered a brief sermon.

The President placed the Casket of Sacred Relics on the tusker. The procession was colourful with dance troupes of Kandyan, low-country and Sabaragamuwa traditions and with ceremonial elephants.

The President unveiled the newly-erected Golden Fence around the sacred Bodhiya and also offered the land in front of the temple to the Gangarama Vihara through a free grant and presented bicycles to three mahouts who had come for the procession.

The Maha Sangha, public representatives, government officials and members of the Dayaka Sabha of the Temple attended the event.

 
 

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says the nature or the extent of challenges do not matter in fulfilling the promises made to the people.

Development works continue in the country while taking necessary steps to control the COVID-19 pandemic, the President said, pointing out that the economy, which had been collapsed for nearly two years, is gradually recovering.

The President made these remarks participating in the first round of discussions in a series of sessions with professionals representing various fields, held at the President’s House recently.

The professionals who participated in the discussion said they are further committed to making the national programme a success by giving the necessary strength to achieve the goals desired by the President.

The majority of the people are positive about the President’s programme. The professionals vehemently rejected the allegations spread by some sections with the objective of achieving narrow political agendas. They pointed out that Sri Lanka is moving forward systematically at a time when the entire world is in a deep economic crisis.
The experts highlighted the need to focus on renewable energy sources and stressed that they would unconditionally support the government to remove existing barriers in this regard.

Vavuniya Campus affiliated to the Jaffna University was made a National University named as Vavuniya University under the patronage of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, this morning. Vavuniya University is the 17th state university in the country. Students and Teachers made requests for a long time to convert Vavuniya Campus into a National University. Accordingly, the government has developed the campus into a University under the ‘Vistas of Prosperity’ statement to uplift higher education. It has been developed as a smart University with modern facilities. The President unveiled the plaque marking the creation of National University and also vested with the students Information Technology center and co-existence center. Addressing the gathering, the President said that the government hopes to create intellectuals will be able to withstand social changes in the future. He pointed out that the education system of the country should be strengthened to make the country powerful. The government has given priority to uplift national education. The number of students admitted to Universities annually, has been increased. The president appreciated the steps taken to prepare syllabuses according to social needs by providing knowledge on English and Information Technology to students who are following arts subjects. The President pointed out it is a present need to identify sectors with high job demands and to create intellectuals suitable for those employment opportunities. He said that the responsibility of the government is to provide opportunity to students who have passed G.C.E. Advanced Level, to study up to a degree. President Rajapaksa said that the bond of co-existence in the University is very strong and it will help in the development of the country

The second volume of the Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha Academic journal was launched Feb (08) under the patronage of Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Deputy Speaker and the Chair of Committees.

A copy of the scholarly journal ''Parliamenthu Sara Sanhita'' was first presented to the Hon. Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Deputy Speaker and the Chair of Committees by the Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake.

The copies of the journal were presented to Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Education and Leader of the House of Parliament and Hon. Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Mass Media.

Articles were called for the second volume of Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha last year under the guidance of the Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake focusing on a number of areas.

This journal contains articles by a number of scholars representing the academic field under a wide range of disciplines such as the Legislative Process, Sustainable Development, Electoral System and its amendments, Parliamentary Reporting and Media, Public Outreach and the Trends in Sri Lankan Women's Politics. The Review Board comprised of Senior Professor Ratnasiri Arangala, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Professor Ajantha Hapuarachchi, University of Colombo, Dr S. J. Yogarajah, University of Kelaniya, Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe, Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo and senior lecturer WijayanandaRupasinghe, University of Kelaniya.

Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha will be distributed to libraries and relevant stakeholders in future. Also, this journal can be obtained by contacting the Department of Communication of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Director Legislative Services and Acting Director for the Department of Communications Mr. H. E. Janakantha Silva announced the initiation of the third volume of the Parliamenthu Sara Sanhitha Refereed Academic Journal at this occasion. Accordingly, from (Feb 08) to April 24, papers will be called for the third volume under 11 subtopics falling under the main theme "Trends of Globalization, Anti-Globalization and Parliamentary Process". The event was attended by scholars representing the university sector, scholars from a number of other fields and heads of departments of Parliament.
